The first version of large language models appeared in fiction in 1950s.
Multivac showed up in Isaac Asimov’s stories as a vast system answering questions at planetary scale. It did not feel like a novelty. It felt embedded. Assumed. Already part of how the world worked.
That detail matters.
Technologies That Arrive Quietly
In 2001: A Space Odyssey, Stanley Kubrick placed a flat tablet into space. Characters read news on it, watched videos, navigated information. No one paused to admire it. No one explained how it worked.
The device was ordinary.
That ordinariness was intentional. The film was not trying to predict a gadget. It was showing a world where that gadget had already settled into daily life.
Decades later, when Samsung challenged Apple’s tablet patents, the film appeared as prior art. A fictional object had entered a legal argument about real technology.
The line between imagination and precedent had blurred.

The Idea of a Diegetic Prototype
There is a term for this: diegetic prototype.
A technology placed inside a story, fully formed, without explanation. It exists in the background. People use it as if it has always been there.
The story does not justify the technology. It normalises it.
That is where the shift happens.
These prototypes do not guide engineers in a direct way. They shape the audience’s expectations. And expectations, once formed, tend to move markets.
Future Possibilities and Speculative Design
Fiction Focuses on the Hard Problems
I, Robot did not try to prove whether machines could think. Isaac Asimov treated that as given.
The focus was governance. Control. Constraint.
What happens when a machine acts with agency. How do you define boundaries. What rules hold when systems operate at scale.
Today, AI alignment is a serious research field. The vocabulary has evolved. The core question feels familiar.
The timeline is interesting. The framing arrived before the technology matured.
Interfaces That Moved From Screen to System
In Minority Report, gesture-based interfaces appeared as part of everyday work. MIT Media Lab was involved during production. The interface was not presented as experimental. It was already in use.
Those interactions now exist in high-stakes environments like surgical systems. The translation from fiction to practice did not happen overnight. The mental model was already in circulation.
A similar pattern shows up in Back to the Future Part II. Video calling appears as routine household behaviour. The technology at the time was fragmented and limited. The behaviour, however, was clear. Casual, integrated, unremarkable.
Fiction made the interaction feel normal before infrastructure caught up.
Diegetic prototypes operate at the level of expectation.
They do not instruct someone to build a device. They create a shared sense of what feels plausible. What feels acceptable. What feels inevitable.
Once that expectation exists, it starts influencing decisions.
Investments follow. Research directions shift. Products align with what users already recognise, even if they have only seen it in a story.
The technology feels familiar the first time it appears in the real world.
The Design Hidden in Plain Sight
There is a design layer here that rarely gets discussed.
Someone decided how these technologies would appear in use. The context. The behaviour. The social norms around them. The absence of explanation. The ease with which people interacted with them.
That is not engineering. That is framing.
It shapes how a system enters culture.
A tablet in a film can feel natural or intrusive. A voice assistant can feel helpful or unsettling. These impressions form before the product exists at scale.
By the time engineers build, part of the work has already been done.

Expectation Becomes Demand
Once a behaviour feels familiar, it becomes desirable.
People begin to expect it. The absence of that experience starts to feel like a gap.
This is where expectation turns into demand.
The path from fiction to product is not linear. It moves through perception first. What people believe is possible. What they are willing to accept into their routines.
That belief shapes adoption.
A Quiet Decision About the Future
The uncomfortable part sits here.
The future does not emerge only from technical capability. It also emerges from what has been imagined, repeated, and accepted.
Before something is built, it is often seen. Before it is used, it is often understood in a loose, cultural sense.
